What is a wrap-around doorframe?

Hello! Blake here from Tekta and today we’re answering the question, “What is a wrap-around doorframe?”

When it comes to specifying and installing hinged doors in controlled environments, the frame design can significantly impact both the cost and the performance of a door, so it’s critical to get it right!

Today, we’re looking at 2 different door frame designs, a standard doorframe, and secondly, the ‘wrap-around’ doorframe.

Firstly, the standard frame:
This frame type is designed for use in masonry walls or supporting steelwork. The frame is fitted into the reveal of the door opening and fixed through the frame, into the supporting substrate. The fixing holes are then capped off and any gaps between the door frame and the supporting substrate are sealed closed with a bead of silicone. This frame type is perfect for most standard doorway applications. However, where it falls down, is when you need to fit a steel door into an insulated panel wall…

..and that’s where our second frame type comes in…

‘Wrap-around’ doorframe:
As the name suggests, instead of fitting into the reveal of a door opening, the frame wraps around the fixing substrate giving greater support and a more hygienic seal. Firstly, a fixing plate is rivetted to the panel wall, to give a secure fixing face. Then a 2-part frame is installed to the opening and secured into the fixing plate. This frame type is typically used in controlled environments like food factories and cleanrooms where a hygiene or airtight seal are required.
It’s also important to note that hinged doors with a wrap-around frame detail are often more expensive than those with a standard frame. This is because the wrap-around frame requires additional materials for its construction.

So, there you have it. The wrap-around hinged doorframe! If you need help selecting the right doors for your project, reach out to the Tekta team today, we’re here to help!
