What does E, EW & EI mean?

These 3 initials (E, EW & EI) are symbols for the 3 different fire ratings you’ll find when dealing with doors.

(I’ve linked a video with more information about the different ratings here).

  • E is an abbreviation for a Fire Integrity rating.
  • EW an abbreviation for a Fire Integrity and Fire Radiation rating.
  • EI is short for a Fire Integrity and Fire Insulation rating.

You’ll often see these initials followed by a number. That number is the amount of time the fire door is certified for. For instance you might have a steel door with a fire integrity rating that’s been tested for up to 60 minutes. An abbreviation for this doors fire rating will be E60. If it had passed the test for up to 120 minutes show as E120, 240 minutes displayed as E240– and so on. You get the picture.
