Navigating Doorway Security Standards
Hello there, Blake here from Tekta, and today we’re talking about security standards for doorways.
When you’re specifying doors for a secure environment, it can be confusing to know what level of security you might need. Generally speaking, doorway security requirements will be specified by the end client, an architect, or a security consultant. In this video, we’re going to run through the three main security standards you’re likely to come across and explain what they are.
First up is a standard called PAS-24. This standard has been developed by the British Standards Institution (or BSI) to set out the minimum security requirements for windows and doors. Products are put through a series of tests that simulate burglary attempts by a casual or opportunistic burglar. The system is scored on a simple pass or fail. If a product passes, it’s considered to provide a basic level of protection. This standard is widely used for domestic doors and windows but can also apply in commercial settings where low-to-moderate security is needed.
Our second standard is EN1627. This is the European standard for burglar resistance, and it offers a more comprehensive testing procedure than PAS 24. Products are put through a series of tests designed to simulate different levels of attack, ranging from casual, to more determined intruders. The standard provides a grading system, which helps to understand how resistant a product is to forced entry, with resistance classes starting from RC1 all the way up to RC6.
Finally, we have LPS1175, an alternative to EN1627. Developed by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), it’s focused not only on burglar resistance but also on protecting against more aggressive attacks. LPS1175 includes a series of resistance classes, starting from SR1 and going up to SR8. Each increase in rating utilises a wider array of tools over a longer attack period. This standard is often used in high-security environments including critical infrastructure, and high-value commercial sites where maximum protection is required.
