Project Brief
Tekta was appointed by TSL to deliver the specialist door package for NewCold Wakefield III, working closely with Ashton Smith Architects as part of the construction of the UK’s largest deep-frozen storage and distribution centre.
Valued at £111K, Tekta’s package formed part of the major Wakefield III expansion, which added a new automated frozen high-bay warehouse to NewCold’s existing operations. The development provides an additional 19,380 pallet locations, significantly increasing storage capacity and supporting the efficient movement of frozen goods through the facility.
Operating at temperatures as low as –23°C, the facility required specialist solutions capable of performing reliably within a demanding, temperature-controlled environment. Effective separation between operational areas is essential for maintaining internal temperatures, minimising energy loss and supporting safe and efficient workflows throughout the site.
Wakefield III incorporates advanced automation, including 16 automated stacker cranes alongside 28 loading docks, enabling high volumes of frozen products to be stored, retrieved and distributed efficiently.
Through the delivery of the specialist door package, Tekta contributed to a highly automated, energy-conscious facility designed to meet the growing cold-chain requirements of leading food manufacturers and retailers across the UK.
Our Solution
Working collaboratively with TSL and Ashton Smith Architects, Tekta delivered a specialist door package designed to meet the demanding thermal, operational and performance requirements of NewCold’s highly automated cold storage facility.
With the facility operating at extremely low temperatures, the door solutions needed to provide reliable thermal separation while supporting the efficient movement of goods and personnel throughout the site. Careful consideration was given to durability, sealing performance and suitability for continuous operation within a fast-paced, temperature-controlled environment.
Close coordination with TSL, Ashton Smith Architects and the wider construction team was essential throughout the project. Tekta worked alongside key stakeholders to ensure the specialist door installations integrated effectively with surrounding building elements, automation systems and operational areas, while remaining aligned with the overall construction programme.
Through detailed planning and efficient installation, Tekta successfully completed the package within a two-month period, helping maintain programme momentum on this major cold storage development.
The successful delivery demonstrates Tekta’s experience in providing high-performance specialist door solutions for complex temperature-controlled facilities. The completed package supports thermal efficiency, product integrity and smooth day-to-day operations while providing the durability and long-term reliability required within an advanced automated logistics environment.
